The Kickapoo River Watershed
Following material is
adapted from DISCOVER! America's Great River Road by Pat Middleton
Gays
Mills is located just out of Ferryville, Wisconsin, on state highway 171. The Kickapoo
River Watershed offers an almost Appalacian-style mountain range--historically known as
the Ocooch Mountains-- that stretches from Mt. Sterling to Gays Mills, and Soldiers Grove.
Canoe the Kickapoo from Ontario or Bicycle the Elroy-Sparta State Bike Trail. Wild Cat
Mountain near Ontario offers camping and scenic trails. Equestrian camping and riding
trails are also available.
The 100-mile long Kickapoo River Basin provides outstanding family canoeing. The
generally placid river twists and turns through peaceful farmland and between dramatic
rocky outcrops. For more about canoeing the Kickapoo River and readily available
shuttle services, please contact our sponsors!
Crawford
County
There are several
scenic drives into the Kickapoo Watershed accessible from the Great River Road.
STH 27 from Prairie du Chien north through Eastman to Gays Mills is a skyline drive that
gradually drops into the Kickapoo River Valley where, in season, thousands of blooming
apple trees decorate the hillsides.
STH
131 north of Wauzeka follows the Kickapoo River to the Vernon County border and the
solar village of Soldier's Grove. The town was rebuilt above the flood plain of the
Kickapoo and has incorporated solar energy construction into all the new commercial
buildings.
Gays Mills and
Soldiers Grove are easily visited by following STH 171 from the Great River Road just
South of Ferryville, Wisconsin.
