Houseboating
Rental FAQ
Many questions come to greatriver.com
about the details of renting a houseboat on the Mississippi River.
1. What kind of gas will we use?
Regular gas is easily available at all marinas along the Upper River. Gas prices are
similar to that of regular gas on the Interstate system.
2. How fast does the boat go?
The houseboat is powered by 2 120-Merc cruisers (I.O.) It travels about 4-5 mph in the
current.
3. Where do we spend the night?
The boats are beached on beautiful sand bars overnight. There are no charges, but please,
leave no litter! Or you may spend the night at any marina for a small overnight charge and
your boat will be safe, with access to all marina facilities.
4. Will we go through any locks? Is it difficult?
Yes, you will have the opportunity to go through locks, but navigating the locks is not
difficult. We will teach you how to do this before you go out.
5. What training is required to drive a houseboat? Any special
license?
No special license or training is required. We will teach you what you need to know by
giving you a shake-down cruise before you head out alone.
6. How far in advance do I have to make reservations?
Boats are booked well in advance. To insure your vacation dates, make your reservations at
least three months in advance.
7. Can we swim in the river?
Yes, it is clean and safe. Fishing is good, the fish are safe to eat.
8. What if there is any problem with our boat?
Rental houseboats are very well maintained and there is no reason you should have any
problem. If you do, all boats are equipped with marine radios. You will always be able to
contact shore and should an emergency arise at home, we can contact you immediately.
